Off Campus Student Housing

Whether you already have a house and need a roommate or your lease is up and you need to find a new apartment, this program is a valuable resource!

The University of Hawaii Off-Campus Housing (OCH) Referral Program is a year-round referral service provided by the University (located on the Manoa campus); the university does not currently own, or operate, any facilities off-campus. Students, faculty, and staff may find off campus housing by visiting the web site, which has information that may assist in finding a place near the University. There are also links to other sites that have housing listings such as our state daily newspaper. The web site address is www.housing.hawaii.edu/och. "Other Off-Campus Accommodations" lists several facilities off-campus that rent to students, including private dormitories.

The web site features a secure login system, which protects the listings placed with us. You must be a registered student or faculty/staff member at the University of Hawaii to access our listing pages. Students, faculty, and staff are required to use their University of Hawaii username to gain access to our listing database. Through our web site you will be able to search listings others have posted with our program, Roommate Available, Roommate Needed, Shared & Vacant Sublets, and Vacant listings. You may also submit a Roommate Available listing if you are in need of a place, or submit Roommate Needed, Sublet, and Vacant listings that you would like to list for rent. Our Vacant listings also include "Room in Private Home" for those looking for only a room to rent. Occasionally, we receive "Room for Services" which are at reduced rent (or sometimes rent-free) in exchange for some assistance or work around the home.

Click on the link called "Students," then enter your UH username and password in the Web Login Service and this will take you to a green"search" page. Select the search method that best suits you, for example, "Search Vacant Listings". A hint to searching for a listing is to keep your search requirements broad and select the option listed "Within 30 days". This will maximize the amount of listings returned. When you find a listing that you like, call the landlord directly and work out the details. It is highly recommended that students visit the unit before signing any leases. It is very rare that landlords will form a contract with a tenant "site unseen". You can look up some information on landlord-tenant codes through the link on the right hand side of our web page.

On the listings, you will also be able to determine whether or not Landlords allow pets in their unit. After searching, you can click on the Landlord's name and it will take you to a details page. There you can see the rental details and if they allow pets. Many of the listings on our site do not allow pets, so you may want to look at other resources. The Hawaii Humane Society has a program called Pets in Housing where you can search for listings that allow pets, or you can see a listing of buildings that allow pets. To see these Pet Friendly Listings, visit: www.hawaiianhumane.org/programs/petshousing/default2.asp

If you would like to view a map of the areas around the University, you may visit the following link: www.housing.hawaii.edu/och/map.htm. On our web site we have a Guide to Living Off-Campus. There is information about utilities, average costs of housing in Honolulu and additional resources.

In addition to the listings posted to the site there are many other resources we can suggest to you to help you find housing information in Hawaii. The following is a list of web sites that you can visit.

The University of Hawaii does not investigate, endorse, or guarantee the accuracy of any listing referrals, the quality of the facility listed or the listed individuals, nor companies and firms listed on our Off-Campus Housing web site Any agreement you may enter into is solely between or amongst the involved parties. A listing on our web site does not indicate University approval or endorsement of any kind. Also, the Off-Campus Housing Program is unable to secure an apartment on your behalf.

The OCH Referral Program's hours of operation vary from semester to semester. Check our web site for this semester's current office hours. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact our office.
