Search Engines

Read the Tips,   Help  or   Tools  page when you use a search engine. Search engines differ in coverage, indexing, and how they retrieve and present information.

[Google button]

Google aims to get relevant search results by using an automated method that ranks relevant Websites.

[AltaVista button]

AltaVista executes both simple and advanced searches. AltaVista can translate a Web page for you instantly, for example, from Spanish into English.

[Yahoo button]

Yahoo -- search by keywords, or browse through comprehensive categories of Web resources.

 

[HotBot button]

HotBot offers numerous power search features, called "custom Web filters."

 

[Teoma button]

Teoma features both basic and advanced searches. Teoma strives to provide subject-specific, relevant results.

 

[AlltheWeb button]

AlltheWeb has basic and advanced searches plus a customizable interface.

 

[AskJeeves button]

AskJeeves is your Internet butler. Ask your question, in plain English.

 

[LookSmart button]

LookSmart includes Web search, directories of Web resources, and links to articles.

 

[Lycos button]

Lycos searches through words in Web site titles and content. Originally Carnegie Mellon University's Web crawler.

 

[Excite button]

Excite offers a search engine plus gateways to sites to news, business, sports, travel, etc.

 

[Internet Sleuth button] Internet Sleuth searches the Web and the Yellow Pages, plus the iSleuth People Finder.
 

[Go InfoSeek button]

Go/InfoSeek features a search engine and headlines from ABC News.

 

[WebCrawler button]

WebCrawler searches by keywords in "plain English" or, in its Advanced Search, with Boolean operators.

 

[MetaCrawler button]

MetaCrawler parallel Web search combines the search services of several different engines simultaneously. Hits are ranked by relevance.

 

[Dogpile button] Dogpile by Aaron Flin is a meta-search engine which utilizes multiple search engines simultaneously. It can also be used to search for news, images, and multimedia.


Directories -- Categories of Internet Resources

Directories point to Internet resources, organized by subject. Resources are evaluated and selected based on their quality and usefulness.

Academic Info

is a subject-based directory of Internet resources of particular interest to students, teachers, and researchers, and includes links to online publications, language and study aids, reference materials, databases, archives, virtual libraries, tutorials, and other educational materials. Browse by subject or search by keyword.

[Clearinghouse button]

The Argus Clearinghouse sponsored by Argus Associates, categorizes subject-oriented Internet resources. Resources are included selectively, and are rated by Clearinghouse staff.

[About button]

About.com categories are managed by human subject specialists.

 

[LibrariansIndex button]

Librarians' Index to the Internet, offers selected links in over 40 subject areas. Maintained by Carole Leita on the Berkeley Digital Library SunSITE.

 

[Congress button]

Library of Congress (LC) Research Centers categorizes Internet resources by subjects.

 

[VRL button] VRL Subject Guide to the Internet organizes handpicked and annotated Web resources.

Part of the Virtual Reference Library presented by the Toronto Public Library.

 

[BUBL button] BUBL Link evaluates, indexes, and describes Internet resources in all academic subject areas, and catalogs them by Dewey Decimal Classification.
 

[Galaxy button]

Galaxy aims to provide contextually relevant, trustworthy information. Info is compiled and organized by topics by human Information Specialists.

 

[IPL button] IPL Subject Collections are compiled by the Internet Public Library, a project of the School of Information at the University of Michigan.
 

[VirtualLibrary button]

The WWW Virtual Library Project is the oldest catalog of the web. It began with Tim Berners-Lee, one of the originators of the Web. It is done by a team of volunteers and is recognized for the quality of its guides.
