HCC Library's magazine and newspaper holdings in paper, microfilm, and
computer full-text, as well as links to the World Wide Web versions of
many periodicals.
An index will help you locate articles about your topic. Print indexes
are shelved on the first floor. The first set of shelves in the Reference
section is the Index Range. In addition, HCC Library subscribes to
computer-based indexes and databases accessible through the Web. These
databases often include the full-text of many articles.

Paper Format
Current issues of magazines are displayed in plastic covers, ordered
alphabetically by title, on the first floor of the Library.
Newspapers are hung on rods near the windows.
Previous issues (called the "backfile") of magazines and newspapers are
held at the Circulation Counter. In many cases, we keep three months of
the newspapers, and at least two years of the magazines. Check
the lists for the specific dates of the paper
periodicals we have. You may request issues of of magazines and
newspapers with a Magazine Request slip and presenting
your HCC library card.
Periodicals are for library-use only, please. You may make copies of
magazine and newspaper articles with the self-service photocopier
machines on the first floor. Copies are ten cents per page.
Microfilm Formats
HCC also has backfiles of some magazines and newspapers in microfilm,
including:
- Magazine Collection Cartridges (used with InfoTrac indexes)
Many magazines are available on microfilm loaded on cartridges. These
cartridges are stored in drawers along the mauka wall of the first floor.
Reader/printer machines for viewing and copying cartridge films are
nearby.
- Microfilm
Backfiles of some magazines and newspapers are available on
microfilm. The microfilm spools are stored in the brown cabinets and
drawers below the MICROFILM sign, along the mauka wall of the first floor.
Reader/printer machines for viewing and copying are nearby. Copies are
ten cents per page.
- Microfiche
Microfiche sheets are stored in drawers beneath the NEWSBANK MICROFICHE
sign on the first floor. Periodicals are arranged alphabetically by
title, and within a title, by date. Reader/printer machines for viewing
and copying are nearby. Please do not refile microfiche, instead place it
in the box on top of the drawers.
The reference librarian can show you how to use any
of the microform reader/printer machines.
Many magazines and news sources are available on
the Web.
Please see our Electronic News
page.
