Purpose
The Honors Committee provides guidance and support to our campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Phi Theta Kappa is a national fraternity of scholars and is specifically for community and junior college students in both technical/occupational and liberal arts programs.
Function
The Honors Committee:
- Verifies all student applications to determine whether eligibility requirements are met for membership in Phi Theta Kappa.
- Submits a list of new members to the KAHILI for publication.
- Maintains accurate records of student applications and is responsible for the storage of these records.
- Establishes deadline dates each semester.
- Provides guidance and support to Phi Theta Kappa by attending meetings and activities.
- Assists Phi Theta Kappa members in achieving their educational goals through one-on-one interactions such as helping with scholarship applications and serving as a role model.
- Supports the Phi Theta Kappa advisors in their duties.
- Recruits new Phi Theta Kappa members and publicizes the goals and activities of Phi Theta Kappa.
Workload
The Honors Committee meets approximately three times a semester. Meetings last approximately one hour with the exception of the meeting to evaluate new Phi Theta Kappa applicants. That meeting may be over two hours depending on the number of new applicants.
Committee members are also expected to attend Phi Theta Kappa activities and guide students in their planning. This should average three to five hours per month, depending on the nature of the activities. There is little or no activity during the summer months.
