ASSIGNED TIME

A few notes on assigned time:

Lecturers are by definition hired to teach fewer than 15 credits. 15 credits at HCC or 16+ in the system requires Provost's approval. Justification and special approval are also required for lecturers not on the system pool, lecturers who do not meet MQs, and any other exceptions.

Justification and special approval are required for overload/assigned time combinations and for overload exceeding the maximum in agreement.

If an instructor/lecturer is teaching a class on a non-compensatory basis, write "NON-COMP" beside or under the instructor's name.

If actual teaching hours/dates are different from printed schedule, submit actual contact hour schedule to Assistant Dean on separate sheet.

All assigned time requires a system assigned time form. (Submit a copy to Karen Kelly.)

Generally the rule for teaching load is a 14 credit limit for Lecturers and 5 days a week for Instructors with a two class-in-a-row limit for Instructors and Lecturers. One office hour per week for each class taught at times convenient for students is required for all Instructors and Lecturers. There is a need for consistency and fairness in teaching load requirements and there are student needs to be considered. Any exceptions will address such needs and are subject to approval by the Dean of Instruction.

Overloads. Overloads are not guaranteed. All assignments in the schedule, including overloads, may be reassigned and overload payment will be made only if the final total teaching load exceeds the regular teaching load for the year.

Avoid low enrollment. See CCCM 6101 and report on classes with enrollment of under 10.

Refer to CCCM 2250 dated July 1, 1991 for the Teaching Assignment Policy. The University of Hawaii Board of Regents has established a standard teaching assignment for full-time faculty in the Community Colleges as 30 semesters hours per year (30 SCH/Yr). At the present time, the following equivalencies to this 30 SCH/Yr standard teaching assignment are being utilized:

  1. For faculty members teaching science, business and/or basic academic skills classes which require a combination of lectures and laboratory exercises, 18 weekly class contact hours per academic year is equivalent to the standard teaching assignment.

  2. For faculty members teaching classes in technical/occupational programs, studio art and health and physical education, and/or basic academic skills classes, which require a different combination of lectures and laboratory or shop activities, 23-25 weekly class contact hours per academic year is equivalent to the standard teaching assignment.

  3. For faculty members teaching classes in Cooperative Education or Work Practicum where students are learning by working in business or industry, following a prearranged sequence of learning activities, 150 students registrations each academic year is equivalent to the standard teaching assignment.

  4. For faculty teaching under uniquely special circumstances, other equivalencies are defined on a case-by-case basis.
