CAMPUS ADOPT A GARDEN PROJECT
Campus Map Showing Selected Garden Areas

Faculty, staff, and other HCC employees may select an area on campus to design, plant, and maintain for the primary purpose of improving the appearance of the campus. Groups of faculty, staff, and others, HCC alumni groups, and departments are welcome. Tools and plants must be supplied by the individuals or groups. A small sign to be erected in each area will identify the group or individual.

Guidelines

Participants:
  • Faculty
  • Staff
  • Retirees
  • HCC Alumni Association

Gardeners' Responsibilities:

  • Design, plant, and maintain an adopted area. It may be necessary to water your garden manually if a sprinkler system is not available.
  • Or maintain an existing designated area, i.e., weeding, raking, picking up trash and cigarette butts, etc.
  • Area must be maintained during your personal time (lunch, breaks, before and after work hours).
  • Communicate with John Gonsalves at his mailbox for plant approval and to adopt a plot.
  • Recycle any existing plants.

Recommendations:

  • Low maintenance plants are highly recommended. Bougainvillea, for example, is not considered a low maintenance plant.
  • Plants should be compatible in size with other plants within a garden area,
  • Maintain plant balance within the area of a building.
  • Do not purchase expensive plants -- expensive plants have a tendency of "walking" away.
  • Bring your own tools, plants, and planting/maintenance tools.
  • Do not plant vegetables and fruit trees. The growers may never have an opportunity to reap the rewards.
  • Dispose of weeds, leaves, and other appropriate materials (no trash or stone) at the compost area between Buildings 17 and 18.

Project Coordinator: John Gonsalves

  • Approves garden areas and plants. John will advise gardeners on gardening methods and provide information about sprinkler lines and other possible underground obstacles in planting areas.
  • Maintains the list of plots and acts as the "campus garden police."
  • Maintains the compost area between Buildings 17 (Sheet Metal) and 18 (Maintenance). Excellent materials to add to the compost area: wood chips, flowers, and small leaves.
