New Business

1. Jess and Leon agreed to serve as an activities/programs subcommittee
for the year. They will solicit and assist with coordinating activities
and programs. Lei Lani agreed to assist with publication of the
newsletters. The committee agreed to publish two newsletters again this
year.

2. Jerry summarized Faculty Development activities that are scheduled in
the near future. The first Teachers Talking Seminar is scheduled for Sept
19 at 3:30 pm. A Tenure/Promotion Dossier/Reappointment Application
Workshop is scheduled for Sept 24. Bob Vericker has coordinated a visit
by of drug enforcement officer to the campus. The officer will present a
workshop in mid-October to faculty and staff on the different drugs and
the behaviors that may be displayed by students and others that we may
encounter on campus who use these drugs. Contact with the Pacific Asian
Affairs Council has been made. Speakers will be brought to campus in
co-sponsorship of Beng Poh Yoshikawa and the International Affairs Office.

3. The Faculty Development Statement, earlier distributed as an email
attachment, was reviewed. The committee approved it as the guiding
document for the Faculty Development efforts for this academic year.

4. Jerry stated that he is working with Todd Kobayashi, IT Specialist, on
updating many of the pages on the Faculty Development Website. Jerry
asked all members to take a look at the website and report any broken
links or outdated information to him so that the website can be updated.

5. Jerry asked all committee member to solicit professional development
activities from their colleagues that can be included in the Faculty
Spotlight section of the October Faculty Development Newsletter. Theron
stated there was an Assessment Conference in May attended by several
faculty members and this would be a good item for the newsletter.

6. Jerry stated that the committee will once again sell Hawaii
Entertainment Books to raise money this year. He has committed to
selling, as a minimum, two cases, 40 books. With these two cases, two
free books will be given to the committee. These will also be sold. The
books will be coming in a couple of weeks and all committee members agreed
to sell as many as they can.

7. The Foundation Account statement was review. The current balance is
$3625.46. Most of this money was from the HCC Banquet and the HCC Fun Run
held several years ago. Lei Lani said she is still recovering from the
work she put into the fun run. In the past, small professional
development awards were given from this account. Jess suggested that
because there are no plans for a major fundraiser this year and more money
was spent from the account last year that was added, no awards be given
from this account this year. The committee agreed. Jerry mentioned he
would check with Ramsey to see if Professional Development money, the
amount has been $10,000 for each of the past two years, will again be
available for faculty and if the Faculty Development Committee will be
tasked with distributing it. If so, the application will be finalized at
the October committee meeting and then sent out to faculty.

8. The sample Tenure/Promotion Dossiers and Reappointment Applications
from the Library were reviewed. Several were chosen for discard. Names
were discussed who Jerry would contact for permission to have new
documents copied and included with the current samples.

Open Discussion

1. Xin provided delicious Big Island Candy cookies that she had purchased
during her time at the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar last month.

2. Jerry stated that Grace Ihara has been suggesting the Faculty
Development Committee sponsor a campus stew cook-off. Jess agreed to
assist with this effort. Grace was declared an adjunct member of the
committee for this project. It was agreed to have the cook-off in the
spring, but no firm date was set.

3. The next meeting was set for October 3, 3:30 pm in Cosmetology. The
committee agreed to have meetings this semester on the first Thursday of
each month at 3:30 pm.
