FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING

MINUTES

Attending:  Jerry Cerny, Xin Li, Edward Santa Elena
Not Attending: Keith Crockett, Lei Lani Hinds, Michel Kaiser, Paul
Onomura, Alan Uyehara

1. A November Faculty Development Committee calendar of activities and a
flyer for the upcoming movie showing of Kwaidan were distributed.

2. The minutes from the October 16 meeting were approved.

Old Business

1. Entertainment Books - Edward asked how many books the committee has
left that have not been sold.  He announced that his wife should be able
to sell several at her work.  Jerry stated that he would check his records
to see how many book are not sold and be in touch with Edward to get books
to him for his wife to sell.  Jerry noted that this fundraising project
should wrap-up by the end of the semester.

2. Jerry stated the Fall Faculty Development Newsletter has been posted on
the web and distributed around campus.  He asked all members to continue
to solicit activities from their colleagues that can be included in the
Faculty Spotlight section of the spring issue.  He also made an offer to
all committee members to write a lead article/editorial for the spring
issue.

3. All committee members were reminded to continue look at the Faculty
Development web site, note any needed updates and corrections, and share
these with Jerry.

New Business

1. Jerry announced that the just completed 3-workshop series of web page
development and the recent presentation on Students with Disabilities were
very successful and all well attended.  He announced the following
upcoming Faculty Development Committee activities:
- Movie showing of Kwaidan this Friday, 11/16, 3:00 pm in 7-634.
- Possible showing at the Windward CC Imaginarium for the HCC community
next Wednesday, 11/21.
- Lecture on tracing the movement of humans around the globe using genes
presented by a Professor from the UH School of Medicine on Thursday,
11/29, 2:30 pm in 2-210.  A $100 honorarium will be paid to the professor
for this lecture with funds from the Faculty Development Foundation
Account.

2. The HCC Holiday Party has been scheduled for December 7 at 4:30 pm in
27-111.  Jerry is co-chair of the planning committee and encouraged all
committee members to assist on the planning committee if they want and to
attend this campus bonding event.

3. A lengthy discussion was held in regard to the professional development
money applications that were received by the deadline.  Sixteen
applications requesting $5345.71 were received.  Two requests were for
major traveling last summer.  Decisions on these requests were deferred
until next spring.  All requests for Summer 2001, Fall 2001, Spring 2002,
and Summer 2002 major travel will be evaluated at the same time.  All
approved major travel requests will be funded equally with the money
available at that time.  Information on the 10 approved requests for $2859
has been communicated to the awardees, Provost, Fiscal Officer, Deans,
Division Chairs, Division Secretary and Faculty Development Committee
members separately.

4. No December committee meeting will be held unless deemed necessary by
the members.  The next meeting will be held in January, 2002, on a day, at
a time and in a location to be announced.

5. The meeting was adjourned at 12:15 pm.
