NOVEMBER FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MINUTES


FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
November 9, 2007
9:00 am - ABRP Facility
MINUTES

Attending: Jerry Cerny, Steven Chu, Pat Gooch, Chris Hacskaylo, and Mario Mediati
Unable to attend: Grace Funai, Charlene Gima, and Ralph Kam
Guests: Monir Hodges, Jonathan Wong

Old Business

  1. Entertainment Books Sales - Jerry announced there are 4 books left to sell. Chris had money to turn in from sales. Jerry stated he will be holding back one book to contribute as a door prize at the upcoming HCC Christmas Party. This was approved. The fundraiser will be completed by December 1.

  2. State Poultry Processors, Inc. Fundraiser - Jerry stated that he has left several messages with this company asking about a "no work" fundraiser. He has yet to receive a return phone call. He will keep trying

  3. Faculty Development Website - In preparation for today's Distance Education Professional Development Workshop, Jerry stated he has looked at the Online Instruction section of the Faculty Development Website and found many broken links. He is in the process of fixing them. He asked all committee members to click around the Faculty Development Website and report any broken or malfunctioning links to him for fixing.

New Business

  1. WILD Professional Development Day - Jonathan Wong briefed the committee on planning to date for the Wo Innovation in Learning Day (WILD), which will be held on March 7, 2008. He shared a spreadsheet containing several topics and several possible workshops for the day. He stated that the Wo Learning Champion Program will be contributing $1000 for the day. The committee members discussed the topics and suggested three, which would be of interest to faculty and staff. The day will begin with continental breakfast, followed by a grand opening, morning workshops, lunch and an afternoon excursion. The Faculty Development Committee agreed to contribute $300 for the day. Monir arrived later and verified that a $5.00 registration fee will be collected from each attendee for the day. The Faculty Development Committee members asked that they be keep in the loop as planning continues. Jonathan and Monir were invited to attend the January and February Faculty Development Committee meetings.

  2. Fall Activities - Two professional development workshop are planned for this month. A Distance Education Workshop will be held today. This is to survey DE faculty as to their professional development wants and needs. Two Syllabus Preparation Round Tables will be held on Thursday, November 29, and Friday, November 30.

  3. Foundation Account - Jerry shared the Faculty Development Foundation Account statement. He stated that Grace Funai has requested $250 for the High School to HCC day coming up in February. The HS2HCC Planning Committee will also be requesting the same amount from the Staff Development Council.

  4. New Faculty and Lecturer Information Memo - Jerry shared a draft of an Information Memo that will be given to all new faculty and lecturers at the start of the spring semester. The committee member agreed it is good as is. Chris stated as a fairly new faculty member, she wishes she could have had such an information memo when she started at HCC. Jerry will handle the logistics of obtaining the names of the new faculty and lecturer members and distribute the memo. He thanked Grace for supplying the Campus Resources for Students section of the memo.

  5. Fall Professional Development Funding Applications - Five Faculty Professional Development Fund Applications were received by the deadline. Four of the requests were funded for a total of $2219. One request for funding to a Mainland conference was deferred and will be evaluated with all other major fund requests in the spring. Jerry will notify those receiving funding, the Business Office and others needing to know. Details of the funding decisions are available from Jerry upon request.

Open Discussion

  1. Chris asked if the committee could offer a workshop on disruptive students with some modeling of disruptive student behavior. Pat stated Early Childhood has a Building Bridges program covering adult learning strategies. Jerry stated he would call the Faculty Development Office at UH Manoa to see if they have any resources for such a workshop.

There will be no December meeting unless pressing business, which cannot be handled via e-mail, arises.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 am.
