November 5, 2003
3:15 pm - Library Study Room

Attending: Jerry Cerny, Dolores Donovan, Leon Florendo, Sherrie Rupert and
Linda Soma
Not Attending: Jess Aki, Theron Craig, Monir Hodges and Allen Tateishi

1. The following handouts were distributed;

Committee Meeting Agenda
Calendar of November Faculty Development Activities
Fac Dev Foundation Account Statement
Compilation of Fall Professional Development Applications

Old Business

1. Activities: Jerry summarized the recent Faculty Development Activities.
Two well-attended workshops on Internet Fraud, Internet Identity Theft and
Keeping Children Safe on the Internet were recently held.

2. Newsletter: The fall issue of the Faculty Development Newsletter has
been distributed through routing slips and posted on the Faculty
Development Website. Jerry reported that several emails were received
complimenting the Newsletter. Dolores is thinking about writing an
article for the spring Newsletter.

3. Special Projects: Leon reported that he is still working on obtaining a
recycle trailer to be located here at HCC. He stated that he understands
that all State departments will be mandated to recycle soon and this would
put HCC in compliance with this mandate.

4. Entertainment Books: Jerry announced that all 45 Entertainment Books
have been sold and the money deposited into the Fac Dev Foundation
account. $390 was made on the sale of these books. Jerry thanked all
committee members for their efforts in selling these books.

New Business

1. Activities: November activities are light, however they include a Wo
Distinguished Lecture at Windward CC this Friday, a Spam Filtering
Workshop next week, and three Career and Technical Education web casts
throughout the month. Jerry has also received a request from admin to
co-facilitate with Eddie Gose, Computer Specialist, a faculty workshop on
getting started in developing a web course. WebCT would probably be part
of a web course and Sherrie Rupert stated that ITS delivers training on
WebCT.

2. Fac Dev Foundation Account: Jerry distributed a Fac Dev Foundation
Account statement. Currently the balance is $4334.18. Jerry asked the
committee members to think about using some of the balance to support
faculty professional development because the amount from the College has
been reduced this year. This will be discussed at a future meeting. The
committee formally approved donating $100 to the College for the Aloha
United Way campus pizza party. Jeannie Shaw, AUW Coordinator, made this
request. She is formulating the criteria for attendance at this
campus-bonding event.

3. Excellence in Education Day: The Wo Project has proposed, and the
Chancellors have accepted, that the campus Wo Learning Champions and the
professional development committees of each campus will plan and
facilitate the activities of the 2004 Excellent in Education Day. The day
has been set aside in the UH calendar as a non-instructional day for the
Community Colleges. Joint meetings can be anticipated in December or
early in 2004.

4. Professional Development Awards: The committee reviewed the 10
Professional Development applications that were received this fall. One,
a major travel request, was deferred for allocation until the spring when
it will be evaluated with all major travel requests. The other nine were
approved for a total of $1685. Names, amounts and activities of approved
requests are available from the Coordinator upon request.

Open Discussion

1. Leon asked about any efforts made to date to plan an HCC Holiday Party.
Jerry stated that some small efforts have been made and that a formal call
for volunteers will made soon. He and Lorry Suehiro, Coordinator, Staff
Development Council, will welcome any committee members who want to help
with the planning. The committee approved contributing $100 to help
support the party.

There will be no December meeting unless a need for one arises.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:10 pm.
