The following handouts were distributed:

Old Business
  1. 2007 Entertainment Books: Femar delivered three checks for books she has sold. Steven still has three books to sell. Once sold and the checks and cash deposited, the fundraiser will be completed. $240 will be earned by selling 40 books.
  2. Fall activities:
    1. 1st Friday Presentations: The first 1st Friday presentation was a huge success. Rick estimated there were 45 faculty, staff and students in attendance. The next presentation will be Friday, November 3. Mark Silliman will be discussing Fulbright Research in Cambodia. All members are encouraged to attend. It was decided that no presentation would be offered in December. The next 1st Friday Presentation will be scheduled for February.
    2. Teachers Talking about ethics/other topics: One of the Accreditation Self Study planning agenda item concerned teaching ethics. Jerry stated that he recently notified all faculty that there is a University of Hawaii Community College Policy Statement on Professional Ethics (Faculty) posted on the Faculty Development website. An email discuss was initiated recently and a Teachers Talking Seminar on teaching ethics was held. This should satisfy the accreditation needs for now. Ralph asked if any seminars are held after faculty members attend the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar. Femar and Jerry responded that mini Great Teachers Seminars have been held in the past and will be held again in the spring.
    3. Gangs and graffiti at HCC: Jerry stated that some groundwork has been done to offer a campus-wide presentation on this topic. Emily Kukulies is interested in getting the Student Senate involved. Rick stated that getting our HCC shop personnel who have been vandalized and tagged, HPD personnel, and community taggers, if possible, involved in a roundtable presentation would be good. This activity will be pursued during the spring semester.
  3. Faculty Development Newsletter: Jerry stated that he has received several compliments on the recently issued Newsletter. Ralph shared a copy of the HPU Teaching and Learning Center Newsletter which is published bimonthly and features articles of interest to faculty regarding pedagogy, scholarship and services at HPU.
New Business
  1. HCC Teaching Center for Excellence: Ralph shared his ideas about establishing a center here. This would include the Faculty Development initiatives that the committee current coordinates and a formal mid semester evaluation program. Ralph would also like to see an in-house faculty and lecture teaching awards program established. HPU has a Golden Apple award. Perhaps with our 3-d printer, awards could be made with it to be given to the awardees.
    1. Mid Semester Evaluations (UH Office of Faculty Development and Academic Support): Ralph shared that currently the UH Manoa Office of Faculty Development and Academic Support conducts mid-semester evaluation of faculty and lecturers at UH Manoa. This is an opportunity for the teachers evaluated to get information in the middle of the semester so changes can be made. This cannot be done with end-of-semester evaluations. Pat Gooch stated that the Early Childhood Education program hires lectures in the PACE program, and such an evaluation would benefit them. Ralph stated that the instrument is more important than the person making the evaluation. Jerry stated he would contact Kathy Kane, Director of the Center at UH, and get more information about their program. If a training session is needed for evaluators, the committee members could perhaps be the first cohort. Jerry also stated that this should be discussed at the Campus Leadership Team meetings so that instructional Deans and Division Chairs are able to add input to this initiative.
    2. HCC Scholarship Day: Ralph stated that when he taught at HPU, they held periodic Scholarship Days where faculty could present mini-sessions on their area of interest or current research. There are many faculty members here at HCC who are doing things that would be of interest of the college community. Jerry stated that this year's first Friday in March would be an Excellence in Education Day. Perhaps a Scholarship Day could be integrated into the Excellence in Ed Day.
  2. HCC Holiday Party: Jerry stated that Guy Shibayama and the Apprenticeship folks are leading the efforts in organizing an HCC Holiday Party. It will be held on December 8th. Faculty and Staff Development committees are included in the planning and marketing and Faculty Development committee member are encouraged to participate and help out as they want.
  3. Koala Moa Chicken sales: Jerry stated that Ken Kato will allow chicken sales in the Dillingham parking lot once a quarter. Jerry has contacted Koala Moa and they are willing to do a sale in early December. Jerry will follow-up to set the date and submit the facility request for this event. In the past 150-200 chickens were sold each Sunday with $1.00 donated to the College for each chicken sold. This money would come to the committee for deposit into the UH Foundation Account.
  4. Professional Development fund awards: Three awards were approved totaling $761. One funding request for attendance at a Mainland conference was deferred until the spring semester. Specific details on these awards are available from the coordinator upon request.
