1. Activities: Jerry summarized the activities for October. Faculty
Development is co-sponsoring a series of computer workshops with the
Information Technology Center and one is scheduled for later in the month.
A Teachers Talking Seminar is scheduled and two Computer Identity Theft
workshops will be scheduled. Jess stated that HMSA does health screening
for members and suggested that a health screening workshop be scheduled
early in 2004 when people are still serious about their new year's
resolutions. Jess believes that Kaiser will also come and do screenings
for its members. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Jerry
stated that Faculty Development will co-sponsor a lunch brown back breast
cancer awareness lecture with Staff Development. Staff Development will
schedule the event and provide refreshments. Faculty Development will
provide a lei for the speaker.
2. Newsletter: Jerry shared a draft copy of the Fall 2003 Newsletter.
Jerry and Dolores are the Newsletter Sub-committee, but all members were
asked to edit the Newsletter and send needed corrections to Jerry in
anticipation of a 10/24 publication of the Newsletter.
3. Leon, who missed the first meeting, was designated Chair of the
Special Projects Sub-Committee. Leon summarized the chicken sale
initiative that he organized. Jerry stated that a second Chicken Sale
check had just arrived. Koala Moa sells chickens at HCC on Sundays and
donates $1.00 to the College for every chicken sold. All we do is
initiate the Facilities Request form. The money is split between Faculty
Development, Staff Development and the Chancellor's Enrichment funds.
Leon also shared that in partnership with the Native Hawaii Center and the
Hearts Club, Faculty Development is pursuing having a Recycle Hawaii bin
on campus for recycling paper, aluminum and glass. If the details can be
worked out, this will be free to the College and the proceeds from the
recycling will be returned to the College. Who gets the money is yet to
be worked out. Also, a location has yet to be decided. Leon believes
that all State agencies will soon be mandated to participate in a
recycling program. Kapiolani CC currently has a Recycle Hawaii bin on its
campus.
4. Jess paid for her three Entertainment Books. Theron stated that
the Chancellor has written a check to purchase a book. This will be
Theron's sixth and last book to sell. Allen and Leon will deliver check
for their books soon. Very few books are left to be sold. Forty-five
books will be sold this year.
5. Professional Development Awards: Jerry shared a draft Professional
Development Award Application form with the committee members. It is the
same form that has been used for several years. It was decided that the
form be used again this year with the dates changed to reflect 2003-04.
Jerry stated that Ramsey and Ken have told him that the Committee would
have $7000 to distribute this year. Theron stated he had just attended a
Chancellor's Staff meeting, and this amount was announced in that meeting
also. It was decided that money, approximately $2000, to support two
faculty members to attend the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar next summer be
set aside. Leon, who attended the Seminar this past summer, shared the
value of the Seminar through his statement of support. It was also
decided that all major travel requests will be evaluated in the spring.
October 31 will be the application deadline for this fall with funding
decisions to be made at the next Committee meeting. Jerry will send the
faculty an email with the form attached and with notification of the fall
deadline.
