members:
- Meeting agenda

- Fall Faculty Development Newsletter
- Fall Professional Development Fund Application
Old Business
- Faculty Development Newsletter - Jerry passed around a draft of
the Fall Faculty Development Newsletter. He stated he has one more
faculty bio left and the Newsletter will be ready to be distributed. He
will post it on the Faculty Development Website and let faculty know. He
will also make limited copies to circulate via the Faculty Development
Routing slips and send a hard copy to all new faculty members.
- State Poultry Processors Chicken Sales - Jerry announced there was
a chicken sale on September 27 and another one upcoming on October 11. He
anticipated receiving one check from the State Poultry Processors owner
for both sales. He will let the committee members know the amount of the
check when it is received. Ken Kato allows one chicken sales event per
quarter. These two are close together, however September and October are
in different quarters so Ken allowed both sales events.
- Entertainment Book Sales - Guy and Jessica turned in checks for
books sold. Jerry suggested the committee donate two books to Guy for
door prizes at the HCC Christmas Party. All members agreed. Jerry stated
the committee was given 12 free books this year so there are more to sell
then the usual 40 books. He will check his files from past years sales
and let committee members know the names of colleagues who have purchased
books in the past and have not yet purchased this year. Guy announced the
HCC Christmas Party will be held on Wednesday, December 16. He stated
several of our younger colleagues requested to have dancing following the
party.
New Business
- Fall Activities - Jerry stated there are two Best Practices using
Laulima Workshop coming up; one tomorrow at 2:30 pm in 2-514 and the
second on the next day, Friday at 11:00 am in 2-514. Next week Friday
there will be a Pine Anonymous Workshop for interested attendees at 11:00
am in 2-505. Ralph was surprised to know that SSH can be set up so
Pine/Alpine can be used to read emails in our @hawaii.edu accounts. Jerry
announced he will schedule a mini Great Teachers Seminar soon and ask
attendees to bring a teaching innovation or teaching challenge to share at
the Seminar. Carol stated she wants to offer a Library Resource Workshop
to faculty and staff, probably later in November. She will let Jerry know
when and he will help pass the word. Jerry also asked all members to keep
asking their colleagues for workshop ideas.
- Fall Faculty Professional Development Fund Application - Jerry
passed around the updated Professional Development Fund Application. It
is posted in the Grants Section of the Faculty Development Website. It
was decided that October 30 will be the deadline for submission for the
fall. Jerry will send an email to all faculty tomorrow announcing this
deadline. Fall monitory awards will be decided at the November committee
meeting. If any major travel award requests are received they will be
deferred and awarded in the spring. Money will be withheld in the spring
for two faculty to attend the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar on the Big
Island next summer.
- Wo Application for January 2010 - May 2011 - Jerry reminded the
members that the current Wo Learning Champions, Kyle Higa and Shanon Miho,
have recently sent out an email with an announcement for the application
procedure for the next generation of Wo Learning Champions. Jerry
encouraged all committee members to consider applying. Serving on the
Faculty Development Committee would strengthen the application. Jerry
started he was a 2nd Generation Wo Learning Champion and the highlight was
receiving $2000 in personal professional development funds to attend a
Mainland conference/activity.
- WILD - March 5, 2010 - Jerry announced that Monday, March 5, 2010,
will be a Wo Innovation in Learning Day (WILD). The new Wo's will be in
charge of planning the activities of the day, however Kyle and Shanon did
not have a WILD during the period of their being Wo's so will also be
leaders in planning the day. Jerry stated the Faculty Development
Committee would assist. He will invite Kyle and Shanon to attend the
November committee meeting to begin the discussions on this day.
Open Discussion
- Guy stated that he has talked to Brian Furuto and still has plans
to organize a major Memorial Fund event to raise money for an endowment
for scholarships in memory of several of our colleagues who have passed
away in the last few years. He also announced there is a Great Aloha Run
planning meeting tomorrow, 2:00 pm in the Apprenticeship Conference Room.
In addition, Construction Career Days will take place on October 21-22.
The gravel parking lot will be closed the whole week for set-up and two
shuttles will run from Lot 8 and Lot 3. The Mayor may come to kick off
the day.
- Ralph stated he has volunteered to take the lead in the 90th
Anniversary celebration of HCC. Although the actual date is in February,
he foresees activities throughout the spring semester. He will need help
to plan the activities. He envisions an 1920's theme with automobiles
from the decade and a fashion show with fashions from the era. The
Carpentry program may perform a Habitat for Humanity project. Ralph
suggested that the WILD day be part of the anniversary celebration. Jerry
asked about the Oral History Project. Ralph said it is coming along and
should be done for the spring celebration.
- Ralph announced that Jonathan Wong has received money to purchase
licenses for e-Luminate, a synchronous web-based meeting software. The
system would allow instructors and students to meet, via their computers,
at a predetermined time. He believes that e-Luminate trainers should come
and deliver training on the system to increase interest and knowledge
among the faculty.
- The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 4 at 2:30
pm in a location TBA.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:20 pm.
