and features for this year's Newsletters. Jerry also asked the committee
members to send him names of colleagues who have professional development
items - conference attendance, book publication, presentations, etc.,
which we can include in the Faculty Spotlight section of the Newsletter.
- Fall Activities - Jerry referenced the results of the Faculty
Development Survey. He also stated that several workshops have already
been scheduled. Last week a New Faculty and Lecturer Workshop was
presented and today and tomorrow a Contract Renewal and Tenure/Promotion
Dossier Preparation Workshop is being presented. Jerry has met with Jan
Petersen and three Distance Education Workshops have been scheduled for
the semester. These will be open to the faculty at large. Jerry also
stated he will organize a monthly Teachers Talking Seminar. One topic
will be Best Practices of Laulima and another will be a mini Great
Teachers Seminar with faculty asked to bring an innovation or teaching
challenge to share. Jerry stated he would be meeting with Kimberley
Gallant, Mental Health Counselor, to set up a series of workshops
educating faculty colleagues about her services. Chris stated that this
would address several items on the Faculty Development Survey.
- Faculty Development Foundation Account - A current account statement
was distributed. Jerry noted that the committee spent more money than was
made last year but that is OK. Money was donated to several worthwhile
causes including lunch for High School to HCC participating faculty, money
to support the Wo Innovation in Learning Day in March and lunch for a
Service Learning all-day meeting. Jerry stated that other committees
often request $25-30 for refreshments during the year. He will always
poll the committee members on spending the requested money before a
commitment is made.
- State Poultry Processors, Inc. - Jerry stated he has talked to this
bar-b-que chicken organization and to Ken Kato. Ken will allow them to
cook and sell chickens in the Admin parking lot once a quarter. The
organization is anxious to do this and will share the profits with the
Faculty Development Committee. They will pick a date and Jerry will
fill-out the necessary paperwork for this to happen.
- Faculty Professional Development money for 2008-09 - Ken Kato has set
aside $10,000 to support faculty professional development this academic
year. The committee will have a fall and spring call for applications.
The application form and fall deadline will be discussed at the next
committee meeting.

Hawaii Entertainment Books this fall. Each committee member was given
three books to sell. Jerry stated that Steven Chu from Auto Body was on
the committee the last two years and has agreed to sell books. He
currently has eight to sell. The price remains at $30.00. Jerry will
send out an email to the campus announcing this sale tomorrow.
- Faculty Mentoring Program - Jerry distributed a Faculty Mentoring

mentor for the program. Mentor/mentoree linkups would be made during the

edits or broken links to him. The committee wants to keep the website as
up-to-date as possible.

would work for fall meetings. The next meeting will be October 2 in the
Library and the November meeting will be on the 6th at a location TBA. A
December meeting will be scheduled later only if deemed necessary.
Open Discussion
- Jessica asked if the Faculty Development Committee could become
involved with the After Graduation Party both for organizers/workers and
with financial support. This will be discussed and a decision made at a
later meeting.
- Chris asked if we had given enough discussion to the results to the
Faculty Survey. Jerry stated that reading it over and compiling results
