FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING

MINUTES

Attending:  Jerry Cerny, K. Gopal, Sharon Ota, Cynthia Smith
Not Attending: Linda Buck, Eric Holmberg, Ivan Nitta, Allen Tateishi

1. Dr. Gopal began the meeting with film clips of marine life 9000 feet
underwater at thermal vents in the Atlantic Ocean and microscopic views of
plankton that live in the ocean.

2. The March committee meeting minutes were approved.

3. There was no April Faculty Development Committee meeting due to the
faculty strike.

OLD BUSINESS

1. None

NEW BUSINESS

1. Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar: The Fac Dev Committee has been tasked
with selecting the two HCC representatives to this summer's Hawaii Great
Teachers Seminar.  Two applications have been received - 1) Evelyn
Lockwood, AERO, and 2) Eric Holmberg, Library.  It was unanimously agreed
that these two would be HCC's participants at the seminar.

2. Newsletter: A spring issue of the Fac Dev Newsletter is complete and at
the print shop.  It should be ready for distribution by this Friday.  A
copy of the newsletter was circulated. 

3. Teaching for Success: The committee members agreed to prepay the
subscription this spring for the 2001-2002 issues of this interesting and
informative publication.  Jerry will handle the paperwork and request for
payment of this from the Fac Dev Foundation account.

4. Success Kits: Several years ago Success Kits were distributed to all
HCC faculty and staff members at the beginning of the fall semester.  The
committee members agreed to do this again at the start of the fall
semester.  Jerry will purchase the supplies and put the kits together for
distribution the week before classes start.  He will be reimbursed for the
expenses afterward from the Fac Dev Foundation account. 

5. End-of-Year Letter: Jerry asked for letters from all committee members
summarizing the highlights of the committee's efforts this year,
suggestions for improvement and suggestions for activities and efforts for
next year.  He will include copies of the letters in a year-end report
that will be submitted to the Chancellor's Office, the Provost and the
FSEC chair.

6. The Fac Dev Committee will organize an after graduation party
celebrating the end of the year and honoring the excellence in teaching
nominees.  The party will be back here on the HCC campus in 27-111
immediately following the graduation ceremony.  Fac Dev will sponsor the
Guangdong teachers to attend the party.

7. 2001-2002 Committee: Jerry encouraged all current members to reapply
for the Fac Dev Committee next year so the committee can continue the good
work that has been started this year.

OPEN DISCUSSION

1. Cynthia suggested that an email solicitation for ideas for Fac Dev
activities be sent to faculty members.  The paper solicitation at the Fall
All-College Meeting often does not obtain the results an email
solicitation would.  Jerry agreed to do this.

2. Gopal suggested having more sporting events next year and volunteered
to offer tennis lessons to faculty and staff in the fall.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 am.
