MINUTES
Attending: Jerry Cerny, Charlene Gima, Ralph Kam, Jessica Kaniho, Chris
Hacskaylo, and Guy Shibayama
Unable to attend: Grace Funai
Handouts - the following handouts were distributed to the Committee
members:
- Meeting Agenda
- Faculty Development Foundation Account Statement
- Flyer for Gettysburg Brown Bag Lunch Presentation
- Flyer for Learning Community Institute at Kapiolani Community
College
Old Business
- Spring Chicken Sale - Jerry stated he has contacted the owner of
the State Poultry Processors and coordinate a chicken sale to take place
in the Admin parking lot on April 26. The owner wanted another sale in
June. Ken Kato rejected this second offer, stating we can have only one
chicken sale per quarter. Jerry will contact the owner and see if he
would like to have a sale in July which would be in the next quarter.
- Spring Newsletter - Chris is nearly finished with her article on
using concrete learning techniques in remedial courses. She will send the
article to Jerry who will incorporate it into the draft of the Spring
Newsletter and publish it. Jerry stated that the Faculty Development
Newsletter may not be published in the future. He believes Ralph Kam's
blog and monthly campus newsletter can take its place.
- Faculty Development Foundation Account - Jerry distributed a
current Foundation Account Statement. We have spent more money than we
made this year, but that is alright. Spending down some of the principle
is acceptable. The upcoming chicken sales will earn some more money.
There will be some refreshment expenses from spring activities.
New Business
- Spring Activities - Jerry distributed a flyer on an upcoming brown
bag lunch presentation by Rick Ziegler on the Battle of Gettysburg. This
may be the last activity for the semester. He also distributed a flyer on
an upcoming Learning Community Institute at Kapiolani Community College,
May 18-20. They are only taking 10 two-member teams at the Institute and
the cost is $100 for each team. It was suggested that Greg Witteman and
Brenda Kwon might want to attend. Jerry will contact them. A discussion
on the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar was held. HCC will pay for two
attendees and System Perkins funds will pay for two. Eric Shaffer and
Mike Ferguson are committed to attend. Ralph Kam stated that John DeLay,
the new Geography instructor, will be on the Big Island doing his PhD
research this summer and might want to attend. Jerry will contact him.
Chris expressed her enthusiasm at having been able to attend two summers
ago and gave a brief overview of the teaching innovation she shared at the
Seminar.
- After Graduation Party - A discussion of the After Graduation
Party was conducted. Jerry restated that the Faculty Development
Committee is not the Social Committee for HCC, but helping out with the
After Graduation Party is appropriate. Jessica has led the planning for
the last two years. Jessica stated that the Shell officials will not
allow HCC to use the stage for the party as in the past. Charlene
believes they are only restricting the main part of the stage, not the
wings or the parking lot. The wings seem too small and too dangerous,
each has an open loading dock, and the parking lot is dark. Some options
that may be pursued are having the party back here at HCC, at Kapiolani
CC, at Waikiki Elementary School, in a tent at the Shell or at College
Hill at President McLain's house. It was also suggested that perhaps we
could have a party outside of graduation. Ralph suggested that we have
the faculty line-up along the fence and congratulate the students as they
walk by at the start of the ceremony. Emily Kululies will be included
with these discussions.
- Academic Year Feedback - Jerry stated he would be writing thank
you letters to each of the Committee members. He stated if the members
want to provide him feedback on how this academic year went for Faculty
Development and how to improve efforts for next year, this can be done
through a letter or email. Jerry will be writing an end-of-year report
when asked by FSEC.
Open Discussion
- Jerry thanked Jessica for providing a room and hosting this
Committee meeting.
- Chris, Charlene and Grace will be leaving the Committee at the end
of this year. Guy and Jessica will serve one more year. Ralph will serve
unless the VCAA want another administrator on the Committee.
- Christ stated that a VA counselor recently offered a presentation
to the CSC tutors on the characteristics of returning veterans which may
enroll at HCC. This will be investigated for a presentation for all
faculty and lecturers next academic year.
This will be the last monthly Committee meeting for the year unless a
pressing need arises which necessitates a May meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:20 pm.
