Old Business
1. The March committee minutes were approved.
2. Jess gave a debrief of the Stew Cook-Off. The Cook-Off was a success.
Over 60 people paid and attended. Ten stews were cooked. Jess reported
she collected money from attendees who signed up ahead of time. Grace
collected money from the sale of the aprons and money from attendees who
paid at the door. Jess has turned in her money. Jerry will meet with
Grace and finalize the money collection. Any money in excess of expenses
will be deposited into the Faculty Development Foundation account. There
was a mix-up and some cooks were asked to pay to attend the Cook-Off. The
committee members agreed to refund $5 to any cooks who paid for the
Cook-Off. Jess suggested that another Cook-Off be held next year. The
decision to do that will be made by the 2003-04 Faculty Development
Committee in the fall.
New Business
1. April and spring activities were discussed. The following activities
are either scheduled or planning to be scheduled for the remainder of the
Spring Semester:
a. Student Writing Workshop - Thursday, 4/3. Co-sponsored with the WI
Committee. Dr. Tom Hilgers, Director of the UH Manoa Writing Program,
will facilitate this writing workshop.
b. Travel Workshop - Friday, 4/11. David Cleveland presented a Saving
Money Using the Internet for Travel Planning Workshop at the March 7
Professional Development Day. Several requests from people who couldn't
attend have requested a 2nd workshop. David has agreed to do this.
c. Webpage Update Workshop - TBA. Monir Hodges has volunteered to
facilitate a workshop for faculty members who want to update their
webpages. Jerry will work with Monir to schedule and publicize this
workshop.
d. Jerry asked for ideas for other workshops and activities that could be
presented this semester.
2. The spring issue of the Faculty Development Newsletter is complete.
Lei Lani has edited the Newsletter and Jerry has imputed her edits. The
Newsletter has been posted on the web and several copies will be printed
and distributed.
3. The Teaching for Success Newsletter that is purchased each year with
Faculty Development Foundation account funds was discussed. Jerry has
received a notice to renew for the next academic year. The renewal is for
a 25-copy license for $400. Jerry will communicate with the publishing
company and investigate a lower price for a 15-copy license. This is
enough to distribute the Newsletter with campus routing slips to all
faculty members and lecturers. The committee agreed to fund this for next
year up to a maximum of $400, but a lower amount if possible.
4. The committee has agreed to co-sponsor the After Graduation Party. The
Excellence in Teaching committee will also be co-sponsoring. Earl
Nakahara has reported that UHPA will contribute $500 for this party. At a
previous meeting, Grace Ihara, suggested the party include "cook you own
steaks." The committee agreed to do this. Jess and Jerry will gather
cost estimates for the party and the additional cost per attendee will be
set after the estimates have been collected. The planning and
communicating will be handled via email.
5. Jerry informed all members that an end of the year report is required
and asked each to write a letter/memo/email reflecting on the activities
of the committee this year and ideas for improvement next year. These
will be due May 9th and included in the end of the year report.
6. Jerry encouraged the "one-year" committee members to indicate the Fac
Dev Committee on the committee request form for next year. He thanked Lei
Lani and Xin for their two-year service on the committee.
Open Discussion
1. There will be no May meeting unless one is considered necessary at a
later date by the committee members.
2. Jess shared handouts from a Mindful Teaching Encouraging Learning and
Thinking workshop she has just completed for her COSME colleagues. The
theme of the workshop was delivering interactive lectures.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:15 pm.
