flyer for an upcoming event were distributed.

3. The January committee meeting minutes were approved.

OLD BUSINESS

1. Jerry summarized the Professional Development awards that were given
out during the fall.

2. Jerry encouraged anyone who has an acquaintance who could give a
campus-wide lunch brown-bag presentation to let him know. A $99 stipend
and a lei would be given for such a presentation. Gopal stated that he
will ask Alexander Malahoff, UHM Director of Ocean and Research
Engineering, to come an talk about the new Hawaiian island that is growing
underwater off the coast of the Big Island. Dr. Malahoff has been
underwater to observe this hot spot many times and could bring a film or
slides. Having the presentation in April was agreed upon.

NEW BUSINESS

1. February Activities: Teachers Talking sessions are scheduled this week
and for the week of the 19th. COSA and Faculty Development co-sponsored a
brown-bag lunch discussion of student retention earlier this month, which
was well attended. The Teachers Talking session on February 22 will be a
follow-up to this lunch discussion. The Faculty Development Committee
will co-sponsor with the Writing Intensive Committee an evaluating student
writing workshop on February 27. Budd Brooks will offer a workshop in
March on making attractive handouts that students may actually read.

2. Professional Development Awards: The deadline for submittal of spring
Professional Development awards will be Thursday, 3/8. This is the day
before the Excellence in Education Conference. Applications will be
evaluated at the March Faculty Development Meeting. The committee agreed
to fund approved applications less than $100 with the Faculty Development
Foundation account and fund approved applications above $100 with the
Provost Professional Development money.

3. Newsletter: A spring Faculty Development Newsletter will be issued in
April. Jerry asked all to gather activities of division faculty
colleagues to be included in the Faculty Spotlight section. Jerry has
found a website where puzzles (crossword puzzles, mazes, etc.) can be made
and will publicize the URL in the Newsletter. He distributed an HCC
Trivia crossword puzzle made at the website, which will be included in
Newsletter.

4. Although the Faculty Development Committee does note have a charge to
be a committee for organizing social events, the following events were
discussed and sponsoring or co-sponsoring is a possibility; 1) spring
social get together at the Marine Center, 2) exam week lunch get together
to honor the Excellence in Teaching nominees, and 3) after graduation
party.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:55am.
