FEBRUARY FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MINUTES

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING
February 8, 2008
12:30 pm - 2-216
MINUTES

Attending: Jerry Cerny, Steven Chu, Charlene Gima, Ralph Kam, and Mario Mediati
Unable to attend: Grace Funai, Pat Gooch and Chris Hacskaylo

The following handouts were distributed:

Old Business

  1. UH Foundation Account: Jerry reiterated that the Committee had earlier committed $250 to the upcoming High School to HCC Day to help purchase lunches and $300 for the WILD Day. Jerry stated he had talked to Grace and she indicated that they should be able to buy plate lunches with a PO so no actual cash has to change hands. Jerry will contact Monir and Jonathan to see if they can do the same for WILD.

New Business

  1. Spring Activities - Jerry distributed handouts for three upcoming workshops: Laulima Development Series, Technology Integration Series and The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), Copyright Laws and UH. Mario stated he has not heard anything specific about the cadre of faculty selected to attend Laulima training at UH and be a resource for colleagues here at Honolulu CC. Jerry stated that Vern Takebayashi and Sharon Vest are planning on presenting another Laulima workshop, repeated on two upcoming Fridays. Ralph stated that several faculty in Liberal Arts use "on demand textbooks" for their courses. This involves letting the publisher know exactly what chapters from a textbook the instructor will cover in a course. The publisher then prints only those sections. The students still purchase these custom books from the Book Store. Charlene Gima, Fumi Takasugi, Brenda Kwon and others use this and may be interested in presenting a workshop on the topic. Wayne Sunahara is also interested in presenting a workshop on student disabilities.

  2. Committee End-of-Year Report - Jerry stated that the Faculty Development Committee End-of-Year report is due on February 25 to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee. He said he will write up the report, share with the committee members and forward on to the FSEC.

  3. Professional Development Money - Jerry stated that the College has given the Faculty Development Committee $20,000 to distribute for faculty professional development this year. $2200 was distributed in the fall, so there is still a significant amount of money to distribute this spring. The committee members agreed the form-fillable .pdf application posted on the Faculty Development website will be used for spring applications. The date was set for Friday, March 7. Only those who received the maximum amount of money per year, $1200, during the 2006-2007 academic year would not be eligible. It was also agreed, depending on the number of requests received, repeat attendees to the Hawaii Great Teacher Seminar on the Big Island in the summer would be evaluated based on the amount of money available.

Open Discussion

  1. Charlene is on the Graduation Committee and asked the Faculty Development Committee's help in encouraging all faculty members to attend Graduation. Jerry said he would bring this up at the next Campus Leadership Team meeting.

  2. The nest meeting is scheduled for Friday, March 14, 1:00 pm, in the College Skills Center

The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 pm so the committee members could attend the Edgy Lee Wo Distinguished Speaker Presentation.
