Excellence In Education Planning
The Excellence in Education Day will be held on Friday, March 6,
later this spring. All former Wo's, the Faculty Development Committee and
the Staff Development Committee will all be part of the planning for this
day. An excellent start to the planning was conducted. The day will
begin with a continental breakfast. Monir and Jessica have agreed to
coordinate this. Lunch will be bentos. Grace will coordinate this. A $5
registration fee will be collected. Jerry will produce and distribute a
flyer for the day, collect registrations and money. The theme for the day
will be retention. The day will begin with a welcome from the Chancellor
followed by a review of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement
(CCSSE) data by Erika Lacro. A plenary of all attendees with a discussion
of retention will follow. The morning will end with breakouts for faculty
and staff. Suggested breakouts include;
- Service Learning
- Learning Community
- Universal Design for Learning
- Retention Follow-up Discussion
- Civility and Treating Everyone with Aloha
Following lunch, an excursion planned by the Staff Development Committee
will take place. Money will come from the registration fee, the Faculty
Development Committee, the Staff Development Committee and the Chancellor.
Jerry will ask Mike Rota if he is willing to contribute money from his
Chancellor's Enrichment Account to help cover the costs of the day.
Old Business
- Guests attending the meeting engaged in Excellence in Education
planning were thanked and dismissed.
- State Poultry Processors fundraiser - Jerry stated that $200 was
earned by this fundraiser in November. $25 was paid to the College for a
profit of $175. Another chicken sales fundraiser will be planned for
March or April.
- Faculty Development Foundation Account - a Foundation Account
statement was distributed. No funds were spent on leis and refreshments
during the fall semester. The following funding requests were approved:
- Up to $35 for refreshments for a recent meeting of those taking
part in the HCC 90th Anniversary Project
- Up to $325 for lunches for the High School to HCC Day on February
27. Grace stated that Allen Tateishi is in charge of this. Jerry will
work with Allen and Nida Chock to coordinate using a PO from the Faculty
Development Foundation Account.
- Up to $300 for Excellence in Education Day
New Business
- Spring Faculty Professional Development money - the timeline for
submission of spring requests for faculty professional development money
will be finalized at the next Committee meeting. Awards will be
distributed at the March meeting.
- Spring Newsletter - Jerry stated he would draft the Spring Faculty
Development Newsletter. Chris will assist and submit an article for it.
She will probably write about using manipultives in remedial and
development courses. Jerry asked for names of new faculty at HCC this
semester who will be highlighted in the Newsletter. The
Newsletter will finalized and distributed mid to late April.
- Faculty Development Committee Charter - Jerry distributed a copy
of the Committee Charter. He stated that is it to be reviewed annually.
The review will be completed at the next Committee meeting. He pointed
out there is a question mark next to the date of authorization by the
FSEC. It was suggested that the question mark be deleted and no date
inputted, so it will state, "Authorized by the FSEC."
- Perkins Assessment Conference - Jerry stated he is serving on a
UHCC System Perkins Professional Development Committee. The Committee is
coordinating a 2nd Annual UHCC Assessment Conference. The Conference will
be held at Windward CC on the Monday and Tuesday of Spring Break, March 23
and 24. Jerry stated a call for proposals will be distributed soon and
more information and registration for the conference will follow. Chris
asked if qualitative can used for assessment. The consensus was, yes.
She has already talked to Ross Egloria about this and may submit a call
for proposals to present this at the Assessment Conference.

The next Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, February 12, at 3:30
