1. January and spring semester activities were discussed. The following
activities are either scheduled or planning to be scheduled:
a. Photoshop Workshop - Intro workshop is scheduled on Feb 7. Budd Brooks
will offer the workshop in the CA Mac lab, 2-315. Follow-on workshops will
be discussed and scheduled with the faculty at the intro workshop.
b. Grant Writing Workshop - Jerry mentioned that during the planning for
the grant writing workshops offered in the fall, a grant workshop
possibility from a UH Manoa office is possible. Jerry will pursue this.
c. Webpage Workshop - Jerry received a request for a webpage editing
workshop. He will talk to Vern Takebayashi to discuss the possibility of
scheduling one or a series. Lei Lani stated that she has received several
requests for computer training. Jerry stated that he would send out an
email computer workshop survey to faculty.
d. Pacific Asian Affairs Council - Jerry stated that Beng Poh, Heidi, the
PAAC Community College coordinator and he have a meeting next week to
discuss PAAC spring semesters presentations. Plans will be shared at the
next Fac Dev Committee meeting.
e. Stew Cookoff - Grace attended the meeting, at Jess' coercion, to update
the committee on the Stew Cookoff plans. She will continue to produce
monthly flyers advertising the event. She is in the process of getting
people committed to enter the cookoff. She will be visiting the off-campus
Tech 1 programs to solicit entrees. Lei Lani is taking the lead in
obtaining aprons. During the Chili Cookoff in 1996, 100 aprons were
produced and all sold. Nadine Leong-Kurio, Librarian, is creating the
design for the apron. Grace stated that the silt screening will be done
free of charge. The date of the cookoff is set for March 20 in the Motor
Pool area of the main campus. Jerry will submit a facilities request and
an alcohol request. Grace reported that she has contacted Jim Neighbors to
be a celebrity judge but he will out of town then. She will contact Ben
Wong, from "Let's go Fishing" and Sam Choy as possible celebrity judges.
f. Student Conduct Code - Jerry and Theron will be scheduling a
workshop or series of workshops covering the Student Conduct Code. Theron
stated that there is not proper reporting being done by faculty and also a
gap between what a faculty member can do and what is being done. It was
stated that this workshop could spawn follow-up Teachers Talking Workshop
on such topics as plagiarism.
2. Jerry encouraged all members to continue to look at the Faculty
Development website and send any needed changes (information updated, dead
links, edits, etc.) to him for fixing. He mentioned that he recently
established a link to a Skip Downing On Course website and commented on
the handout for this website distributed at the start of the meeting.
Jerry also mentioned that he is part of a UHCC Faculty Development Carl
Perkins Voc-Ed committee that is planning on bringing Skip Downing to
Hawaii during the spring of 2004 for a series of workshops. He also stated
that he is the Wo Learning Champion for HCC this year and the Wo members
are developing a Wo website. It will contain a faculty resource area and
much of it will be direct links to our website.
3. The fall Entertainment Book sale is complete. Forty-two books were sold
and with donations, approximately $300 was made for the Faculty
Development Foundation Account. Jerry shared a Foundation Account
statement with the committee members.
4. Jerry stated that the Wo project members are also developing a system
faculty mentoring program. The decision was made to do no more
solicitations for the HCC faculty mentoring program, and to wait for the
Wo mentoring program. Assessment of the HCC mentoring program was
discussed.
5. There is approximately $9000 left for Professional Development Awards
this spring. The application form will be discussed and finalized at the
next Fac Dev meeting. The application deadline will be late February with
awarding decisions made at the March meeting.
6. Xin brought several flyers for the 2003 Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar
that she received because she attended this past summer. Jerry will make
sure with Ramsey that 2 HCC colleagues will be sent this summer. If so,
the committee will solicit applications and make the decision before the
end of the spring semester.
7. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, at 3:30 pm in
the Title III area.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 pm.
