FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING

Old Business

  1. New Faculty/Lecturer Memo - Jerry shared the final draft of a five-page information memo that will be sent to new faculty and lecturers each semester. He stated he had contacted all the Division Secretaries and received the names of three new counselors in Student Services and two new AJ lecturers in Tech 2. Steven identified a new faculty in AMT and Pat identified a new lecturer in ECE who should receive a copy of the memo.
New Business
  1. WILD - Monir Hodges attended and gave an update on WILD, which will take place on March 7. She shared a list of activities that have been planned by her and Jonathan Wong, HCC Wo Learning Champions. She will put together a list of activities needing support and the Faculty Development Committee members will sign up to help. Jerry will assist with collecting registrations and money. Steven will check with Sumo Bento on prices of their bentos. Mario is getting bentos for the Science Bowl from ETC in the cafeteria and will send Monir contact information to see if they can provide bentos for WILD. Staff Development will coordinate the bus and afternoon activities. The committee reiterated that $300 will be donated to support the day.

  2. Spring Activities - Jerry distributed handouts for two upcoming workshops: Laulima Workshops on Friday, January 18 and January 25, and Copyright Workshop on Thursday, February 21. He stated he will contact Kathy Kane, from the UH Office of Professional Development to see if a mid-semester evaluation project is feasible for this semester. She attended a Faculty Development Committee meeting last year and follow-up is needed. Jerry shared that two activities coordinated by the UHCC System Perkins Professional Development Committee will take place this semester. The first is an integrated academics workshop at Windward Community College on March 24 and 25 and the second is an Assessment Mini-Conference here at HCC on April 11. Perkins funding will support these activities. More information will be provided later. Jerry asked each committee member to survey their division colleagues to gather ideas for other professional development activities that could be planned this spring semester.

  3. Spring Professional Development Funding Requests - Jerry stated that the majority of the $10,000 given to the committee for faculty professional development is left to be awarded this semester. The application and awarding procedure will be discussed at the next Faculty Development Committee meeting. The application deadline will be early March with awards being made at the March committee meeting. Jerry encouraged all members to apply for funding for professional development or consider attending the Hawaii Great Teachers Seminar on the Big Island this summer.
