TOEFL Scores and Exceptions
Scores must be from a test no earlier than two years prior to date of enrollment. The student must have a minimum TOEFL score of 500 (paper based test) or 173 on the computer based test to be admitted to Honolulu Community College. If your TOEFL score is between 400-499 (paper based) or 97-172 (computer-based), you may apply for Honolulu English Language Academy (HELA).
Students do not have to take the TOEFL test if they fall into one of the following categories:
- Native language is English
- Completed 30 transfer level semester credits in a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, Australia, Great Britain, Canada or New Zealand OR
- Completed a course equivalent to Honolulu Community College’s English 100 with a grade of "C" or higher.
- The applicant has completed three years of high school education in the United States, Great Britain or Canada and successfully completed English each year. The student will also have to test above English as a Second Language at HCC.
