Disability Access

I am unable to walk from the student parking lot #8 and need to park on the main campus. What can I do?

You will need to have an official disability parking placard I.D. card to be able to park on the main campus.

With your official disability parking placard I.D. card, you can go straight to the Cashier’s Office within the Business Office area (Building 6-Administration) and present the following:

  1. Your valid disability parking placard I.D. (If you lost your I.D., you must go to the Health Office for assistance)
  2. Your paid fee slip or receipt
  3. Driver's license
  4. Car registration
  5. Proof of insurance coverage
  6. Safety check certificate
  7. Payment for parking (as of November 2004, parking cost $20/semester)

You will be required to complete a HCC Disability Parking Request Form [PDF] and HCC Parking Application.

If you don’t have an official disability parking placard and currently has a mobility problem, you may pick an application up from any Satellite City Hall or you may call the Disability and Communication Access Board (DCAB) for more information at 586-8121 (voice/text) or click to view parking placard information to access official instructions and application.

I cannot manage the stairs in Building 7 and 27 and need floor-to-floor elevator access? What can I do?

For Building 7 – Interim Arrangements
Interim arrangements can be made with the Library staff until you are issued an elevator key/card. The Library staff will be more than happy to assist you in accessing the inside freight elevator in Building 7 so you can get to and from classes in the building. The elevator can be called and sent to where you are by calling them at 845-9221 or x 221 from a campus phone. We care about your safety!

  • If you ever need immediate assistance to get out of Building 7 and are not able to manage stairs, call Security at 284-1270.
  • For semester-long arrangements for classes you may be enrolled in, please contact the Health Office to make arrangements to obtain an elevator key/card.

For Building 7 and 27 – Arrangements for the Semester
Short-term arrangements can be made for students requesting an elevator key/card for Building 7 or 27 should contact the Health Office to obtain a special elevator key/card and present their valid official disability parking placard I.D. card or obtain a verification form from the Health Office for their doctor to fully complete. Special arrangements may need to be made in advance for students with evening and weekend classes that start or end when the library is closed for business.

  1. You should complete a Verification Form for Elevator [PDF] and have your M.D. to complete it.
  2. Return completed form to the Health Office for approval (may take 2-3 days to process).
  3. Once approved, a request form is written and issued to you to take to the Business Office. It takes a minimum of 1-2 working day to process your request and prepare an elevator key will be issued for your use during the semester. You may call the Business Office at 845-9142 (voice/text) to check to see whether your elevator key is ready for pick-up.

Please note: Elevator key requests are good for the semester they are issued for and elevator key/card must be returned by the last day of the semester. You will not be able to register or making changes to your classes if you do not return this elevator key/card. $10 (price subject to change) is charged for an elevator key/card that is lost and not returned.

Where can I get the Verification Form?

You may download and use the most appropriate form based on your request. One form is for Elevator [PDF] requests. The other form is for Academic Support [PDF]. You may download the forms or you may go to the Health Office or the Cashier Office to get a copy.

For physical disabilities, a State of Hawaii Disability Parking Placard or completed Verification Form for Elevator [PDF] may be submitted. For academic support requests, a completed Verification Form for Academic Support [PDF] or documentation prepared and signed by an appropriate, qualified professional such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, learning disabilities specialist, or neurologist trained in testing and diagnosing LD/psychological disabilities may be submitted. Documentation should be a current assessment of the student as an adult and must include a diagnosis, description of functional limitations that affect academic performance, and a recommendation for accommodations.
