The Technology Integration Series

Overview

In conjunction with the First Year Experience/Learning Communities program, the Native Hawaiian Center's Technology Integration studies and pilots new technologies for use in the classroom. Training workshops are conducted as part of this iniative in conjunction with Faculty Development and the Wo Learning Champions. Workshop topics and training dates and times are listed below.

Student Response Systems: TurningPoint

This workshop gives an overview of Student Response Systems and how instructors can use them to gauge student learning LIVE within the classroom instantaneously. This workshop focuses on the TurningPoint system provided by Turning Technologies. Student Response Systems keep students involved and engaged in class and are invaluable course assessment tools that help instructors ensure that their SLOs are met. To utilize the Student Response System instructors must use MS PowerPoint to deliver course lectures as SRS are built to be fully integrated with MS PowerPoint. Workshop attendees will utilize TurningPoint to develop their own interactive SRS enabled PowerPoint lecture and will take it with them to use in their own classroom.

For years the concept of Mind Mapping has been taught to help us sort and organize our thoughts and ideas to help us visualize important key concepts. Whether we are writing a paper or organizing a project getting our ideas down on paper helps being clarity and vision to accomplishing our goals. In the digital age this process is greatly simplified through the use of mind mapping software and tools as opposed to the large sheets of paper and gallons of ink of the past. In this session we compare and contrast three leading Digital Mind Mapping tools: Gliffy, MindMeister and Bubbl.us. We also cover basic mind mapping concepts to lay a solid foundation in using these tools effectively.

Learn how to organize and keep your website bookmarks and references all in one place. Do you use multiple machines between your home, school and job to do research? Learn about this and other nifty tools that will allow you to keep all your bookmarks secure in one place so that you can access them no matter where you are, PLUS share them with your friends. This workshop will focus on the del.icio.us service provided by Yahoo!, an excellent tool where you can not only store your bookmarks, but share them with your friends as well which makes it an ideal service for group research projects and collaboration as well as fun "social" applications.

Learn how to simplify, centralize and manage all of the news web sites or blogs you read on a daily basis through an RSS reader. Do you spend hours all day surfing to various news sites simply trying to keep up with the latest information? RSS (Really Simple Syndication) allows people to automatically download the latest news and information from web sites to a News Reader program for review at their leisure. The benefit to this is NEVER missing out on a news post ever again and being able to review news updates just as easily as you read your e-mail. Join us and see how easy it is to set-up and digest news information through RSS - All The News In the World - On Your Terms.



Intro to Social Networking: Engaging Your Students Within and Beyond the Classroom Walls

MySpace and Facebook. You've heard of them. You know your students are on them. The first half of this workshop gives a quick overview of MySpace and Facebook, the two most popular Social Networking sites for college students on the Web. We'll go over Social Networking and how you can leverage it to help enhance both your availability to service your students as well as how to enhance your classroom teaching. Student users of both services will be on hand to discuss ways in which THEY would like to see there instructor's using MySpace or Facebook to reach out to them.

It's a fact. Students of the current generation live and breathe social networks. They're fun, they're interactive and all of their friends are on them. Learn how to specifically harvest this tool for your own students through the creation of your own social network. In this session we will review the concepts of social networking and relate them to retention strategies. Secondly, you will have an opportunity to develop your own social networking site through a free service called Ning. Whether you choose to create a Social Network for your class or for your program your students are bound to enjoy the opportunity to interact with one another in this fun, interactive, customized environment.



Laulima Development Series:


The Laulima Development Series is offered as professional development series to the campus to provide updated training and information for Faculty and Staff. Three tracks of Laulima Development Workshops are offered: Laulima for Instruction, Laulima for Workgroups and -- where there is sufficient overlap – Laulima for Instruction and Workgroups.


Part 1a: Laulima for Workgroups - Managing Departments, Teams, Committees and Projects with Laulima

As a University of Hawaii system faculty or staff member you have access to the Laulima collaboration site. Many of you may use or be looking to use Laulima to publish course syllabii, notes or assessment tools for your courses. However, did you know that you can ALSO use Laulima to help manage your research projects, committee assignments or departmental projects? Is there a committee or a joint grant or proposal you're working on? Does your department have a need to improve its communication or collaboration processes? This workshop will show you some of the different ways you can effectively use Laulima to manage group projects and collaborate effectively with your colleagues, committee members and project teams.



Part Ib: Laulima for Instruction: Intro to Course Management Systems - Copyright in Education and Web 2.0 Overview

Date and Time: Thursday, October 9, 2008 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This is the first workshop in the Laulima Development series and it will go over everything you need to know prior to even considering using Laulima or any other type of online course management system. This session will go over the following: Copyright Law for the Education Sector including Fair Use, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act and the Teach Act. We will also go in depth into Web 2.0 technologies, what they are and how they evolved. This background will be of benefit to you to understand as Laulima incorporates many of these Web 2.0 tools. The workshop ends with a brief intro to the Laulima system.



Part II: Laulima for Instruction - Laulima's Course Management Tools

In this session we'll be covering the various tools within Laulima that you as the instructor can configure and use to effectively manage and run your course sites. Among the tools we'll be covering are: Syllabus, Schedule, Announcements, Gradebook, Post 'Em, Drop Box, Roster and Polls.



Part III: Laulima for Instruction and Workgroups -- Laulima's Content Management Tools

Date and Time: Thursday, October 23, 2008 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Target Audience: Instructional Faculty, Non-Instructional Faculty and Staff

In this session we'll be covering the various tools that you as the instructor can configure into Laulima to develop your course sites into the powerful, interactive teaching/workgroup tools that they can optimally be. Among the tools we'll be covering are: Resources, Modules, News, Podcasts, Link Tool, Presentation, and Web Content.



Part IV: Laulima for Instruction and Workgroups -- Laulima's Communication Tools 1: Chat Rooms and Discussion Boards

Date and Time: Thursday, October 30, 2008 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In this first session on Communication Tools we'll start discussing the multitude of Communication tools available in Laulima for you and your students/workgroups to not only communicate with each other, but to engage deeper into the learning process as well. First we'll explore the use of Chat Room and how you can adapt them to your teaching/CMS style or workgroup system. From there we explore Discussion Boards and take a look at how they can be used to develop rich asynchronous discussions between your students/workgroup and yourself. Finally we take a look at and compare and contrast the three Discussion Board solutions Laulima offers: Discussion and Private Messages, Discussion, and Forums.



Part V: Laulima for Instruction and Workgroups -- Laulima's Communication Tools 2: Wikis and Blogs

Date and Time: Thursday, November 6, 2008 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In this second session on Communication Tools we continue our look at the multitude of Communication tools available in Laulima for you and your students/workgroups to not only communicate with each other, but to engage deeper into the learning process. In this session we revisit the Web 2.0 technologies of Blogs and Wikis, explore how they've been adapted to the classroom setting and take a look at how Laulima integrates them by exploring the BlogWow and the Wiki tool.



Part VI: Laulima for Instruction and Workgroups -- Laulima's Communication Tools 3: Mailing Tools

Part VII: Laulima for Instruction -- Laulima's Assessment Tools 1: Assignments and Gradebook

In this first session on Assessment Tools we take a look at how you can use Laulima to administer and evaluate course assignments. We'll be going over the following: Assignments and Gradebook. In the hands-on portion of this workshop you will have an opportunity to upload and input your course assignments into the system as you build your own Laulima course for your class.



Part VIII: Laulima for Instruction and Workgroups -- Laulima's Assessment Tools 2: Tasks, Tests and Surveys

Date and Time: Thursday, December 4, 2008 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In this final session on Assessment Tools we take a look at how you can use Laulima to administer and evaluate student exams or quizzes as well as solicit feedback through surveys and polls. We'll be going over the following tools in Laulima: "Tasks, Tests and Surveys," and "Polls." For Workgroup solutions you’ll learn how you can solicit team feedback through these same tools. In the hands-on portion of this workshop you will have an opportunity to upload and input your quizzes, exams, surveys or tests into the system as you build your own Laulima course for your class or team.



Part IX: Laulima for Instruction and Workgroups -- "Pimp" My Laulima

Date and Time: Thursday, December 11, 2008 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In this session you will learn how to "dress up" and customize your Laulima site beyond Laulima's basic customization offerings. You will learn to reorder and selectively "turn off" features in Laulima from student view through the "Page Order" tool. You will learn to incorporate graphics into your site as well as redirect sections of your Laulima site to other online course ware tools you may have developed.
