This workshop gives an overview of Student Response Systems and how instructors can use them to gauge student learning LIVE within the classroom instantaneously. This workshop focuses on the TurningPoint system provided by Turning Technologies. Student Response Systems keep students involved and engaged in class and are invaluable course assessment tools that help instructors ensure that their SLOs are met. To utilize the Student Response System instructors must use MS PowerPoint to deliver course lectures as SRS are built to be fully integrated with MS PowerPoint. Workshop attendees will utilize TurningPoint to develop their own interactive SRS enabled PowerPoint lecture and will take it with them to use in their own classroom.

For years the concept of Mind Mapping has been taught to help us sort and organize our thoughts and ideas to help us visualize important key concepts. Whether we are writing a paper or organizing a project getting our ideas down on paper helps being clarity and vision to accomplishing our goals. In the digital age this process is greatly simplified through the use of mind mapping software and tools as opposed to the large sheets of paper and gallons of ink of the past. In this session we compare and contrast three leading Digital Mind Mapping tools: Gliffy, MindMeister and Bubbl.us. We also cover basic mind mapping concepts to lay a solid foundation in using these tools effectively.

Learn about this and other nifty tools that will allow you to keep all your bookmarks secure in one place so that you can access them no matter where you are, PLUS share them with your friends. This workshop will focus on the del.icio.us service provided by Yahoo!, an excellent tool where you can not only store your bookmarks, but share them with your friends as well which makes it an ideal service for group research projects and collaboration as well as fun "social" applications.

The first half of this workshop gives a quick overview of MySpace and Facebook, the two most popular Social Networking sites for college students on the Web. We'll go over Social Networking and how you can leverage it to help enhance both your availability to service your students as well as how to enhance your classroom teaching. Student users of both services will be on hand to discuss ways in which THEY would like to see there instructor's using MySpace or Facebook to reach out to them.

It's a fact. Students of the current generation live and breathe social networks. They're fun, they're interactive and all of their friends are on them. Learn how to specifically harvest this tool for your own students through the creation of your own social network. In this session we will review the concepts of social networking and relate them to retention strategies. Secondly, you will have an opportunity to develop your own social networking site through a free service called Ning. Whether you choose to create a Social Network for your class or for your program your students are bound to enjoy the opportunity to interact with one another in this fun, interactive, customized environment.
The Laulima Development Series is offered as professional development series to the campus to provide updated training and information for Faculty and Staff. Three tracks of Laulima Development Workshops are offered: Laulima for Instruction, Laulima for Workgroups and -- where there is sufficient overlap – Laulima for Instruction and Workgroups.

As a University of Hawaii system faculty or staff member you have access to the Laulima collaboration site. Many of you may use or be looking to use Laulima to publish course syllabii, notes or assessment tools for your courses. However, did you know that you can ALSO use Laulima to help manage your research projects, committee assignments or departmental projects? Is there a committee or a joint grant or proposal you're working on? Does your department have a need to improve its communication or collaboration processes? This workshop will show you some of the different ways you can effectively use Laulima to manage group projects and collaborate effectively with your colleagues, committee members and project teams.

This is the first workshop in the Laulima Development series and it will go over everything you need to know prior to even considering using Laulima or any other type of online course management system. This session will go over the following: Copyright Law for the Education Sector including Fair Use, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act and the Teach Act. We will also go in depth into Web 2.0 technologies, what they are and how they evolved. This background will be of benefit to you to understand as Laulima incorporates many of these Web 2.0 tools. The workshop ends with a brief intro to the Laulima system.

In this first session on Communication Tools we'll start discussing the multitude of Communication tools available in Laulima for you and your students/workgroups to not only communicate with each other, but to engage deeper into the learning process as well. First we'll explore the use of Chat Room and how you can adapt them to your teaching/CMS style or workgroup system. From there we explore Discussion Boards and take a look at how they can be used to develop rich asynchronous discussions between your students/workgroup and yourself. Finally we take a look at and compare and contrast the three Discussion Board solutions Laulima offers: Discussion and Private Messages, Discussion, and Forums.

We'll be going over the following tools in Laulima: "Tasks, Tests and Surveys," and "Polls." For Workgroup solutions you’ll learn how you can solicit team feedback through these same tools. In the hands-on portion of this workshop you will have an opportunity to upload and input your quizzes, exams, surveys or tests into the system as you build your own Laulima course for your class or team.

In this session you will learn how to "dress up" and customize your Laulima site beyond Laulima's basic customization offerings. You will learn to reorder and selectively "turn off" features in Laulima from student view through the "Page Order" tool. You will learn to incorporate graphics into your site as well as redirect sections of your Laulima site to other online course ware tools you may have developed.
