Grants
Federal Pell Grants
Federal Pell Grants does not need to be repaid (unless you do not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements) and are available to students who have not received a Bachelor’s Degree.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG)
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) does not need to be repaid (unless you do not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements) and are available to students with exceptional financial need and are enrolled in at least half-time status. Priority is given to Federal Pell Grant recipients.
Federal Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG)
Federal Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG) does not need to be repaid (unless you do not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements) and are available to full-time enrolled students receiving a Federal Pell Grant who are US citizens that have completed a rigorous secondary school program of study, and graduated from a high school after January 1, 2005.
Hawaii Student Incentive Grants (HSIG)
Hawaii Student Incentive Grants (HSIG) does not need to be repaid and are available to students who are Hawaii residents, enrolled at least half-time status, and receiving a Federal Pell Grant.
Loans
Federal Perkins Loan Program
Federal Perkins Loan Program (formerly NDSL) is a long-term loan program that must be repaid with a fixed interest rate of 5%. Repayment and interest begins nine months after the student drops below half-time status and deferment options are available for students who are not able to pay the minimum monthly payment. Loan amounts are based on demonstrated financial need and availability of funds.
Federal Family Educational Loan Program (FFELP)
Federal Family Educational Loan Program (FFELP) (formerly Guaranteed Student Loans) is a long-term loan program that must be repaid with a fixed interest rate. These loans are borrowed from a private lender; such as a bank or credit union, and guaranteed by the Federal government. There are three types of FFELP loans:
- Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans have a fixed interest rate of 6.8% (for loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2006). Note: Loans disbursed prior to July 1, 2006 have a variable interest rate. Repayment and interest begins six months after the student drops below half-time status and deferment options are available for students who are not able to pay the minimum monthly payment. The annual loan limit differs depending on the students’ academic level and existing Stafford loan balances.
- Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans have a fixed interest rate of 6.8% (for loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2006) and interest begins to accrue on the loan once the funds are disbursed. Note: Loans disbursed prior to July 1, 2006 have a variable interest rate. Repayment begins six months after the student drops below half-time status and deferment options are available for students who are not able to pay the minimum monthly payment. The annual loan limit differs depending on the students’ academic level, dependency status, and existing Stafford loan balances.
- Federal PLUS Loans are available to parents of dependent students who are enrolled at least half-time status and based on credit history. This loan has a fixed interest rate of 8.5% (for loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2006). Note: Loans disbursed prior to July 1, 2006 have a variable interest rate. Repayment and interest begins once the funds are disbursed and deferment options are available. Parents can borrow up to the calculated cost of attendance minus other aid the student is receiving.
State Higher Education Loans (SHEL)
State Higher Education Loans (SHEL) are available to Hawaii residents and must be repaid with a fixed interest rate of 5%. Repayment and interest begins nine months after the student drops below half-time status and deferment options are available for students who are not able to pay the minimum monthly payment. Loan amounts are based on demonstrated financial need and availability of funds.
Student Employment
Federal Work-Study (FWS)
Federal Work-Study (FWS) provides part-time employment on- and off-campus to students who are enrolled at least half-time status. Students are limited to the maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic terms. Awards are based upon the students’ need and availability of funds.
Tuition Waiver (Pending Board of Regents action)
Native Hawaiian Tuition Waivers
Native Hawaiian Tuition Waivers was established to support the increased number of Hawaiian and part-Hawaiian students seeking a degree in higher education. This program is available to Hawaiian and part-Hawaiian students who are enrolled in at least half-time status, show demonstrated financial need, maintain satisfactory academic progress requirements and maintain a GPA of at least 2.0. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and will be asked to submit a personal statement. Recipients of the tuition waiver will be required to attend an orientation session, two counseling sessions, and participate in one Malama Day.

Honolulu CC Opportunity Grants
Honolulu CC Opportunity Grants are available to students who are enrolled in at least half-time status, show demonstrated financial need, and meet satisfactory academic progress requirements. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Award amounts are dependent on the students’ enrollment level, need, and availability of funds.

Honolulu CC Promising Hawaii High School Graduate Scholarship
Honolulu CC Promising Hawaii High School Graduate Scholarship was established to promote quality educational programs through the recruitment of promising Hawaii high school graduates. Applicants must be a graduating Hawaii high school senior nominated by their Principal or Counselor and submit a personal statement. Students must have a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.5, be accepted into a degree seeking program at Honolulu CC, completed the COMPASS placement test, meet program prerequisites for math and English, and be enrolled at least half-time status. This scholarship is for one academic year and must be used in the academic year following high school graduation. Continuation of the award for the spring semester is contingent on maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
Honolulu CC Recruitment (Non-Traditional) Scholarship
Honolulu CC Recruitment (Non-Traditional) Scholarship was established to encourage a balance of male and female students in various Honolulu CC programs of study. Scholarships will be awarded to students who are majoring in programs customarily dominated by members which the College has determined are of the opposite sex. Applicants must be accepted into an eligible degree-seeking program at Honolulu CC, be program ready (meet all requirements to begin taking major coursework), enrolled at least half-time status, and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Currently, priority will be given to female students majoring in AMT, ABRP, CARP, EIMT, FIRE, MARR, and RAC; however, females students majoring in AEC, AERO, APTR, AVIT, CENT, DISL, IED, OESM, SMP, and WELD will also be considered. For male students, priority will be given to those majoring in COSM, FT, and HSER. Continuation of the award for the spring semester is contingent on maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
Honolulu CC Pacific Islander Scholarship
Honolulu CC Pacific Islander Scholarship was established to provide relevant education and training to those in the Pacific who will assume positions of leadership, responsibility and service in the Pacific region. The Office of the President updates and distributes the list of eligible Pacific Island jurisdictions. Currently, citizens of American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Futuna, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Republic of Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, or Wallis have been designated. Applicants must be from one of the above nations, must be accepted into a degree-seeking program at Honolulu CC, enrolled at least half-time status, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, and provide a personal statement. Continuation of the award for the spring semester is contingent on maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
Honolulu CC International Student Scholarship
Honolulu CC International Student Scholarship was established to encourage highly qualified international students to attend and to provide relevant education and training to those who will assume positions of leadership and service in the Pacific and Asia regions and around the world. Applicants must be non-US citizens who have been accepted into a degree-seeking program at Honolulu CC on an F-1 student visa, enrolled full-time and paying full non-resident tuition. Applicants must have completed at least 12 credits at Honolulu CC, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, and provide a personal statement. Continuation of the award for the spring semester is contingent on maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
Scholarships
Charles R. Hemenway Scholarships
Charles R. Hemenway Scholarships are available to Hawaii residents who are enrolled in at least half-time status, show demonstrated financial need, and meet satisfactory academic progress requirements. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit a personal statement.
Hawaii Veteran’s Memorial Fund Scholarships
Hawaii Veteran’s Memorial Fund Scholarships are available to Hawaii residents who are enrolled full-time status, show demonstrated financial need, and meet satisfactory academic progress requirements. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit a personal statement.
Honolulu CC General Aid Fund Scholarship
Honolulu CC General Aid Fund Scholarship was created to provide general support for students at Honoluu CC who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, accepted in a degree-seeking program at Honolulu CC, and be enrolled at least half-time status. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit a personal statement.
Ngo Wong Loo and Man Kwong Loo Memorial Scholarship
Ngo Wong Loo and Man Kwong Loo Memorial Scholarship was established in loving memory on behalf of their children in 1994 for a graduating senior with potential for success in the academic realm. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior with a minimum high school GPA of C+, be a Hawaii resident, show financial need, be accepted into a degree-seeking program at Honolulu CC, and enrolled full-time. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit a personal statement. This scholarship is awarded to a first-year, full-time Honolulu Community College student and is renewable for an additional year as long as the student maintains at least a 2.5 GPA and receives no unsatisfactory grades.
Phyllis Loveless Scholarship
Phyllis Loveless Scholarship is available to students who live or work in the Kalihi-Palama area and are accepted in the Honolulu CC Early Childhood Program. Application and selection are made through the department.
Ruth E. Black Scholarships
Ruth E. Black Scholarships are available to students whose parents are or were employed in the Hawaii construction industry, show demonstrated financial need, and meet satisfactory academic progress requirements. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
State of Hawaii B Plus Scholarships
State of Hawaii B Plus Scholarships was established by the State of Hawaii to recognize public Hawaii high school graduates who have a high school cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, show financial need, and be enrolled at least half-time status. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit a copy of their high school transcript to the Honolulu CC Financial Aid Office.
Student Opportunity Fund Scholarship
Student Opportunity Fund Scholarship was created to provide tuition assistance to students at Honolulu Community College who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be a Hawaii high school graduate, have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, accepted in a degree-seeking program at Honolulu CC, and be enrolled at least half-time status. Applicants must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit a personal statement.
UH Centennial Scholarships
UH Centennial Scholarships was established by the UH Office of the President to celebrate the UH System’s centennial and provides an opportunity for the state’s brightest students to attend a UH Campus. Applicants must be a Hawaii resident, a Hawaii high school graduate in May 2007 or later, have a high school cumulative GPA of at least 3.8 or 1800 score on the three-part SAT Reasoning Test, be admitted and attend as a freshman in the fall semester after graduation, and be enrolled as a full-time student at the home campus. Applicants must submit a copy of their high school transcript to the Honolulu CC Financial Aid Office. Scholarship awards will be $1,000 per year and will be renewed up to 4 consecutive semesters at a UH Community College as long as the student maintains at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
