Distance Education

Distance Education is a multi-media approach to independent learning. Honolulu Community College offers cable, online, and cable+online courses. All courses carry full academic credit and their content is equivalent to what you would receive in a more traditional mode of delivery. Credits transfer within the University of Hawaii system if courses are required for your major. All courses also require college level reading, writing and math, unless stated otherwise.

Cable Courses

Registration for cable courses require that you be a cable subscriber. We highly recommend having a VCR with timer to tape programs. Check that your area receives the appropriate channels listed below. Hickam does receive cable programs. Additional information can be found at: http://www.hawaii.edu/dlit/UHTV/

  • Oahu - Oceanic channel 55
  • Hilo/Kona - Na Leo Hawaii channel 55
  • Kauai - Hoike channel 55
  • Maui - MCCTV channel 55

It is also required to contact the instructor immediately after registering.

Online Courses

Online courses require:

  1. Access to the internet
  2. Experience with computer applications and email.
  3. A University of Hawaii e-mail account
  4. A current version of Netscape or Internet Explorer.

It is also required to contact the instructor immediately after registering.

Cable + Online Courses

Cable + online courses use both technologies to deliver the course material. You must be a cable subscriber and it is highly recommended that you have a VCR with timer.

You should also have:

  1. Access to the internet
  2. Experience with computer applications and email.
  3. A University of Hawaii e-mail account
  4. A current version of Netscape or Internet Explorer.

It is also required to contact the instructor immediately after registering.

The table of contents will provide you with information that will, hopefully, answer the majority of your questions concerning cable courses and appropriate support services available once you are registered as a student.

If you still have questions after reviewing the material, you may contact Jan Petersen via e-mail or at (808) 845-9437.
