Read the textbook:  A History of World Societies, Vol 1 to 1715, McKay et al, 7th edition pages:  180 – 189; 333 – 343.

WEEKLY QUESTIONS

Please answer the following questions and submit answers to me through email or regular mail. These should be submitted to me by Monday, March 9.  Each answer should be at least 2 - 3 paragraphs.  I will read over your answers and send them back with comments. This exercise is worth 10 points.

1.    Identify and describe two examples of how Korean civilization was influenced by Chinese culture.

2.    Identify and explain two examples of how Japanese development and history were significantly impacted by geography.

3.    Identify and describe one example of how Japanese culture merged Japanese traditions and Chinese influences to produce distinctive cultural elements during the Heian era.

After you have completed the reading, please enter the class discussion though the Laulima site for this course (https://laulima.hawaii.edu/portal).   You should offer three comments responding to these questions, and/or to the comments of your fellow students. If you have questions, please review the Class Procedures.   You should have participated in the discussion by Monday, March 11.

Discussion Questions:

1.    Korea and Japan are examples of civilizations deeply influenced by their geographic locations.   What are some important consequences of geography in either/both of these civilizations that you found interesting?

2.   Japan is noted for its ability to absorb new influences, yet maintain important traditional features of its culture.  What was the most interesting example of this ability touched on in our brief historical overview, or that you know of in Japan's later development?

3.  The cultures and histories of East Asian civilizations were closely tied together, in particular after the second century CE..   What are some ways in which these connections are still apparent?
