(to be taken during the week of October 20 - 27 )

The Mid-term exams covers material from Unit 1 - Unit 8.

PART I.  IDENTIFICATIONS:   You will be asked to show your knowledge and understanding through "fill in the blank" questions.  I will write out a description/ definition.  You fill in the blank to identify what that term is.  You will have to know these terms (there will not be a list to choose from - that would be matching.)  There will be 20 fill-in-the-blank questions taken from the terms below.   Again, I write out the description - you will write the term that is being described.  40 points. 2 pts each

PART II.  SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS: You will have the choice of 6 out of 10 questions to answer in short answer form. Recognize, a short answer response means that it does not need to be in the form of a formal, structured essay answer. However, your responses should be much longer than a brief identification, and address the question completely.  As a general guideline - you should expect to write about two to three full paragraphs in response to each of the questions asked.   10 points each.  60 points

The short answer questions will be drawn from the following major ideas/themes.  Recognize - you have already written up descriptions and summaries of many of these points.  You should review carefully the weekly questions, your responses, and any feedback I gave you.

MAIN IDEAS

- Understand the comparative differences between "civilization" and the "pre-civilized" or Paleolithic lifestyle.

- Understand how geography effected the formation and character of the civilizations we have studied, in particular Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, and Greece.

- Be prepared to describe how trade, migration, and empires contributed to the spread of ideas and cultural influences in the ancient Near East; and be prepared to briefly provide specific examples of these forces (i.e. role of empires and specific example of Persian Empire).

-   Understand what is meant by a "traditional society".  And - be prepared to describe specifically the ideas/religions/systems which sustained traditional patterns in India and in China.

- Be prepared to describe in general detail the fundamental, defining ideas/beliefs of the key religions/philosophies we have covered:  Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism.

-  Be prepared to describe the important achievements and changes which occurred during the Qin and the Han Dynasties in China.

-  Be prepared to explain the meaning and significance of the polis in ancient Greek civilization.   Also, be prepared to describe the important contributions of ancient Greek civilization in areas such as politics and culture - including long term effects as part of the Hellenistic world.
