PART I.  IDENTIFICATIONS:  You will be asked to show your knowledge and understanding through "fill in the blank" questions.  I will write out a description/ definition.  You will fill in the blank to identify what that term is.  You will have to know these terms (there will not be a list to choose from - that would be matching.)  There will be 20  fill-in-the-blank questions taken from the terms below.   Again, I write out the description - you will write the term that is being described.  40 points. 2 pts each

PART II.  SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS: You will have the choice of 6 out of 10 questions to answer in short answer form.   Recognize, a short answer response means that it does not need to be in the form of a formal, structured essay answer. However, your responses should be much longer than a brief identification, and address the question completely.  As a general guideline - you should expect to write about two to three full paragraphs in response to each of the questions asked. 10 points each.  60 points

The short answer questions will be drawn from the following major ideas/themes.  Recognize - you have already written up descriptions and summaries of many of these points.  You should review carefully the weekly questions, your responses, and any feedback I gave you.

MAIN IDEAS

-- Be prepared to describe the defining characteristics of the European feudal period (the Medieval age), including description of the key reciprocal relationships which held this society together.  Also, be prepared to identify and describe important legacies of this period.

-- Be prepared to describe in broad, general terms the important changes that resulted in the transition from Medieval - to Early Modern European civilization, including:
    * economic changes
    * the problems/disasters of the Late Middle Ages
    * the Renaissance
    * the Protestant Reformation.

-- Be prepared to describe the three important phases of early Japanese development which include:

    * isolated period during which early traditions of Japanese civilization established;
    * the important influences on Japanese of early relations with Korea and China;
    * the fusion of these influences that emerged during the Heian Period/Era.

-- Be prepared to describe the defining beliefs of Islam.

-- Be prepared to identify and describe the significant effects of Islamic expansion and empires including:
    * early Arab expansion taking place between 900 - 1500 A.D. in Asia
    * Turkish expansion resulting in the Ottoman Empire - 14th - 20th centuries in the Mediterranean region

-- Be prepared to explain the significant effects of the Mongol expansion and empire.

-- Be prepared to describe the significant influences of geography and the natural environment on the development of African and American civilizations.
