Course Description:
Intended to provide the beginning student with a non-rigorous but adequate background in the
fundamentals of chemistry. Suitable for students preparing for training in the life sciences
and for those seeking a practical approach to chemistry.
Course Objectives:
Course Content:
Chemistry 151 is an introductory general chemistry course. It is intended to provide a fundamental
knowledge of chemistry to students who are entering the life sciences, seeking a general
understanding of chemistry, or intend to take higher level chemistry courses. Topics covered include
properties of matter, atomic theory, stoichiometry, reactions in solution, chemical bonding, and
equilibrium.
Evaluation:
There will be five short (20 min.) quizzes (20 points each), three one hour exams (100 points each),
and a comprehensive final exam (200 points). Homework problems will be suggested, but they will not
be collected or graded. Missed quizzes will receive a score of zero. Exams missed for compelling
reasons, (i.e. illness) may be rescheduled. Rescheduling a missed exam is done at the student's
initiative and at the instructor's convenience. Make up exams will be more difficult than the
original exam. Final grades will be assigned as follows:
| A | 90 - 100% |
| B | 80 - 89% |
| C | 65 - 79% |
| D | 50 - 64% |
| F | < 50% |
